LinkedIn Expands Matched Audiences API Access for CRM Integration

LinkedIn Expands Access to Matched Audiences API: Integrating CRM and Email Outreach With Ad Campaigns

LinkedIn Announces General Availability of Matched Audiences API

In August 2026, LinkedIn announced expanded access to the Matched Audiences API for qualified developers. They can now apply for access to the tool through the LinkedIn Developer Portal.

The API allows advertisers to programmatically create and update advertising audiences based on their own data, including contact and company lists. This creates additional opportunities to integrate LinkedIn Ads with CRM platforms, Email Outreach platforms, and other customer data management systems.

What Actually Changed

This is not, in fact, the introduction of a new targeting tool.

LinkedIn Matched Audiences is a long-standing equivalent of Customer Match in Google Ads and Custom Audiences in Meta Ads. Advertisers could already upload contact and company lists, match them to LinkedIn users, and use them for audience targeting or exclusions.

Before August 2026, programmatic access to the Matched Audiences API was limited to a group of approved developers and integration partners.

LinkedIn has now expanded the opportunity to obtain access: qualified developers can apply directly through the Developer Portal. Approval is still required, and developers must first obtain access to the LinkedIn Advertising API to use the Matched Audiences API.

The main change is broader opportunities to automate audience synchronization, not the introduction of new advertising signals or optimization strategies.

Integrate CRM and Direct Marketing With LinkedIn Ads

The Matched Audiences API allows advertisers to use data from different systems to build and regularly update advertising segments.

Which Platforms Can Be Used?

Category
Platforms
Data that can be used
CRM
Salesforce, HubSpot, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Pipedrive, Zoho CRM
MQL/SQL lead statuses, deal stages, customer lists, target companies.
Email Outreach
Apollo.io, Instantly, Smartlead, Lemlist, Reply.io
Email replies, positive responses, contacts in sequences, completed outreach campaigns.
Sales Engagement
Outreach.io, Salesloft
Scheduled meetings, communication outcomes, engagement stages.
Marketing Automation
Marketo Engage, ActiveCampaign, Brevo
Lead scoring, webinar registrations, form submissions, marketing segments.
ABM and Intent Data
6sense, Demandbase, Bombora
Target company lists, engagement levels, intent segments.
CDPs and Data Warehouses
Segment, Hightouch, Census, BigQuery
Segments based on unified customer data and events.

Important: The platforms listed are potential data sources, not a guaranteed list of ready-made LinkedIn integrations. Transferring data may require a custom connector or a third-party integration service.

How It Works

Suppose a B2B company uses HubSpot for sales management and Apollo.io for cold email outreach.

  1. A contact receives an email through Apollo.io and replies, expressing interest in the product.
  2. The system records the positive response and updates the contact's status in the CRM.
  3. The integration adds the contact to a LinkedIn audience of interested leads through the Matched Audiences API.
  4. LinkedIn matches the submitted identifier to a user's profile.
  5. The advertiser uses the resulting segment in a LinkedIn Ads campaign.
  6. When the contact's status changes, the integration can automatically exclude the contact from one audience and add them to another.

LinkedIn does not necessarily receive the correspondence itself, deal history, or other CRM events. The external system determines whether a contact belongs to a segment and sends supported identifiers.

Practical Use Cases

  1. Retargeting after Email Outreach. Contacts who respond positively to emails in Instantly or Smartlead are added to a LinkedIn advertising audience. Ads continue introducing the prospect to the product and its benefits.
  2. Supporting open opportunities. Companies marked as Open Opportunity in Salesforce or HubSpot are included in a separate ABM audience. Advertising campaigns support communication with the organization during the decision-making stage.
  3. Excluding existing customers. After a deal moves to Closed Won, the contact or company is excluded from new customer acquisition campaigns and may be added to a segment for upsell or cross-sell.
  4. Using Intent Data. A company creates a list of organizations showing strong interest based on data from 6sense, Demandbase, or Bombora. The list is sent to LinkedIn for targeted B2B campaigns.
  5. Synchronizing marketing and sales. Contacts with MQL, SQL, or Meeting Booked statuses are automatically distributed among advertising segments according to their current funnel stage.

These scenarios require identifiable contacts or companies, technical integration, and compliance with LinkedIn's personal data requirements. Arbitrary audiences from Google Ads or Meta Ads cannot automatically be transferred to LinkedIn without a company's own database of permitted identifiers.

Affect's Takeaway: Automating Account-Based Marketing

Expanded access to the Matched Audiences API is of greatest interest to B2B advertisers, agencies, and companies using Account-Based Marketing (ABM), a marketing approach focused on specific target organizations and people involved in purchasing decisions.

In ABM, advertising audiences need to reflect the current state of the sales funnel. But with manual list uploads, segments quickly become outdated: new leads do not enter advertising audiences, while existing customers continue receiving initial acquisition ads.

The Matched Audiences API makes it possible to automate updates to these lists by synchronizing advertising segments with CRM, Email Outreach, and other data sources.

For Affect, the main benefit of the update is reducing manual work, keeping audiences more current, and coordinating advertising campaigns more closely with the sales team's activities.

However, broader API availability does not itself guarantee lower CPL or higher conversions. Results will depend on source data quality, segmentation logic, contact matching, and the effectiveness of the advertising strategy.
