Google Ads Introduces Lead Intent Scoring and Journey-Aware Bidding
On September 18, 2026, Google Ads introduced two technologies designed to improve lead quality. Lead Intent Scoring helps sales teams prioritize inquiries, while Journey-Aware Bidding takes additional funnel stages into account when setting bids.
As of October 2026, Lead Intent Scoring is in pilot testing, while Journey-Aware Bidding is available in beta for selected Search campaigns.
Why Google Ads Is Developing These Tools
Leads with the same acquisition cost can have different commercial value. For example, one campaign generates 100 leads at $20 each and three sales, while another generates 50 leads at $35 each and seven sales. Based on CPL, the first campaign looks more efficient, although the second produces more customers.
Google already supports CRM conversion imports and Enhanced Conversions for Leads, but long sales cycles and insufficient volumes of final conversions make algorithm training more difficult. The new tools are intended to use information about lead quality at different stages of the funnel.
Lead Intent Scoring: Assessing Commercial Intent
Lead Intent Scoring is a pilot system for predicting prospective customers' level of interest. Google uses available signals and historical CRM data to evaluate an inquiry before the sales team completes its qualification.
The system assigns leads to one of three levels: High Intent, Medium Intent, or Low Intent.
If a company receives dozens of enterprise software demo requests at the same time, the sales team can prioritize inquiries with higher predicted intent.
During the pilot phase, the tool is designed for forms on advertisers' websites, Google Lead Form Ads, and Call Ads. Availability should be confirmed for each specific account.
The main limitation is that Lead Intent Scoring is not currently used for bidding. It is a tool for prioritizing lead management, and a High Intent rating does not guarantee a sale.
Journey-Aware Bidding: Training Smart Bidding on Funnel Stages
Journey-Aware Bidding helps algorithms account for the customer journey across multiple stages: initial inquiry, MQL, SQL, sales proposal, and Closed Won.
Optimizing only for form submissions can attract inexpensive but low-potential leads. Using only closed deals, on the other hand, may provide insufficient training data.
According to Google's description, Journey-Aware Bidding allows Target CPA and Maximize Conversions strategies in supported Search campaigns to consider signals from different goals, including events that have not been directly selected for bidding.
For example, a campaign can optimize for Qualified Lead while also considering information about which inquiries later become Closed Won deals.
This does not mean that all Secondary events should be changed to Primary. It is important to maintain a meaningful goal structure, provide reliable CRM data, and account for the beta feature's limited availability.
How to Prepare Google Ads for the New Tools
The main requirement for both technologies is high-quality data about leads and sales. If the system only sees a form submission, it does not have complete information about the inquiry's commercial value.
Google Ads supports the Qualified Lead and Converted Lead conversion categories. The first indicates an inquiry that meets established qualification criteria, while the second applies to a subsequent stage, including a successful deal.
To configure these events, open Goals → Conversions → Summary. Create a new conversion action using imported CRM data and select the appropriate category.
Enhanced Conversions for Leads helps match advertising interactions with subsequent offline events. Data can be transferred through Data Manager, the API, and other supported connections.
It is important to regularly send deal statuses and values, comply with user data requirements, and monitor matching accuracy.
Even a properly configured import cannot compensate for inconsistent qualification. If sales representatives apply different SQL criteria or leave gaps when recording sales, the algorithms receive contradictory signals. Companies need consistent rules for moving prospects between funnel stages.
How Lead Intent Scoring Predictions Work
Lead Intent Scoring and conventional lead qualification serve different purposes. CRM statuses such as MQL and SQL are assigned based on a company's internal rules and sales representatives' actions. Google's prediction is generated before this process is completed, using available signals and historical patterns.
Suppose an enterprise software provider receives dozens of demo requests. If the sales team cannot process them all simultaneously, a High Intent rating helps determine the order of initial outreach. However, this is not a reason to automatically reject Low Intent inquiries. Even a prospect with a low predicted score may turn out to be commercially valuable.
The pilot system supports inquiries submitted through forms on advertisers' websites, Google Lead Form Ads, and Call Ads. Support depends on the participation conditions of the specific advertising account. In Google's published description, it is important to distinguish between using these ratings for sales team operations and using them in the advertising auction. Lead Intent Scoring does not currently set bids based on its predictions.
Why Journey-Aware Bidding Differs From Standard Offline Conversion Imports
Advertisers could previously import deals from their CRM and optimize advertising for qualified leads or Converted Leads. However, a long sales cycle creates a delay: the final event may occur several weeks after the click.
If a company selects only immediate form submissions as Primary conversions, the algorithm receives a large volume of data, but its commercial value may be low. If closed deals become the only primary goal, there may not be enough data for stable learning.
Journey-Aware Bidding attempts to use more context without requiring every intermediate event to become a primary conversion. In supported Search campaigns using Target CPA or Maximize Conversions, the algorithm considers signals from different funnel stages while preserving the optimization goal selected by the advertiser.
For example, a company sends an initial inquiry, MQL confirmation, SQL status, and Closed Won event to Google Ads. The campaign can continue optimizing for Qualified Lead, while information about subsequent stages helps refine predictions of lead quality. This is particularly relevant when there are relatively few sales but substantially more intermediate signals.
Practical Data Requirements
Before implementation, it is important to verify that each event has a clear business definition. For example, MQL may mean that a prospect matches the target industry and company size, while SQL may require confirmation of need, timeline, and budget. If different sales representatives assign statuses inconsistently, importing that data will not produce high-quality training signals.
Google Ads provides the Qualified Lead and Converted Lead categories for these events. They can be configured through Goals → Conversions → Summary, followed by CRM data transfer through Data Manager, the API, or a supported integration.
Enhanced Conversions for Leads, which uses permitted user identifiers, can help ensure accurate matching. Advertisers should verify upload completeness, delays between stages, the absence of duplicate events, and accurate transmission of sales values.
It is also important not to confuse reporting goals with optimization goals. Having an event configured as Secondary does not mean it needs to become Primary. The bidding configuration should match the campaign's business objective and the capabilities of the specific beta product.
Who Can Benefit Most From These Updates?
B2B SaaS. Product demonstrations, contract negotiations, and closing deals can take months.
Professional services. Consulting, legal, and financial companies receive inquiries with substantially different potential revenue.
Corporate education. Purchasing a training program may require several stages of approval.
High-value products and services. For these companies, the likelihood of closing a deal is more important than achieving the lowest possible CPL.
However, advertisers with low volumes of CRM conversions and inconsistent qualification processes should first establish reliable funnel measurement.
What Is Known About Effectiveness and Limitations?
As of October 2026, there is insufficient independent research to determine the average impact of Lead Intent Scoring and Journey-Aware Bidding on cost per qualified lead, sales volume, or ROI.
Lead Intent Scoring does not replace a sales representative and does not guarantee a purchase. Journey-Aware Bidding does not eliminate the need to select appropriate goals and bidding strategies. Both tools depend on CRM data quality.
The update reflects Google's gradual shift from evaluating lead volume toward a deeper understanding of commercial value. While availability remains limited, advertisers' main priority should be preparing high-quality data and measurement infrastructure rather than looking for a new toggle in the interface.
