Google Ads Data Strength Uplift: New Measurement Tools 2026
On September 10, 2026, Google Ads announced the Data Strength Uplift Metric, a new metric for evaluating the contribution of an advertiser's own data to the completeness of conversion tracking. It makes it possible to assess additional events that were recorded thanks to first-party data settings, including Google Tag Gateway and Enhanced Conversions.
At the same time, Google continued developing Data Manager and diagnostic tools. On October 13, the company announced the expansion of Data Manager to Google Analytics and Display & Video 360, as well as the continued rollout of Data Strength Uplift in Google Ads.
The key nuance is that improved conversion tracking does not necessarily mean an increase in actual sales. This distinction is important when evaluating the update.
What Is Data Strength?
Data Strength combines the quality, completeness, and availability of first-party data that an advertiser provides to Google. This includes purchases, leads, customer identifiers, order information, audience lists, and CRM events.
For example, an online store has transaction information, while a B2B company records MQL, SQL, and Closed Won stages in its CRM. These data help Google more accurately connect advertising interactions with actual results.
Data Strength is not a measure of campaign performance comparable to ROAS or CPA. More complete data transmission does not guarantee sales growth, but it provides the system with more information for measurement and optimization.
Which Tools Contribute to Data Strength?
Google Tag
Google Tag records user actions on a website, including purchases, registrations, and form submissions. However, browser-based data transmission may encounter technical limitations, privacy settings, and implementation errors.
Google Tag Gateway
Google Tag Gateway for Advertisers allows the tag to be served through the advertiser's own domain infrastructure. Google is developing integrations with CDN and CMS providers, including Cloudflare, Akamai, and Fastly. This approach can improve the resilience of measurement signals, but it does not eliminate the need for user consent and compliance with privacy requirements.
Enhanced Conversions
Enhanced Conversions uses permitted user-provided data, such as an email address, to improve conversion matching. Identifiers are transmitted in hashed form. For lead generation, Enhanced Conversions for Leads allows the initial inquiry to be connected with subsequent CRM events.
Google Ads Data Manager
Data Manager centralizes connections to CRM systems, cloud storage, and other supported data sources. It can be used to configure the transmission of offline conversions, audiences, and other first-party signals. The Data Manager API makes it possible to automate some integrations.
How the Impact of First-Party Data Was Measured Before
Before the update, advertisers could already implement Enhanced Conversions, Google Tag Gateway, and offline conversion imports. However, determining the quantitative contribution of these tools to conversion tracking was not easy.
For example, after implementing Enhanced Conversions, Google Ads shows 880 purchases instead of the previous 800. This does not automatically mean that advertising generated 80 new customers. Some transactions may have existed before but were not matched with advertising interactions.
In addition, sales trends are influenced by seasonality, changes in budgets, and demand. A simple comparison of periods does not make it possible to distinguish actual business growth from improved measurement.
What Changed on September 10, 2026?
Google introduced the Data Strength Uplift Metric, designed to evaluate additional recorded conversions resulting from first-party data infrastructure. In a published interface example, Google showed a 5% increase in recorded conversions over the previous 14 days.
The metric reflects the effect of improved measurement. It does not replace experimental measurement of the incremental demand generated by advertising.
Data Strength Uplift vs. Conversion Lift: Key Differences
Data Strength Uplift shows the contribution of additional data to conversion tracking. Conversion Lift measures incremental conversions caused by advertising exposure, usually through an experimental methodology.
For example, a company made 1,000 sales, but the advertising system correctly recorded only 900 of them. More complete identification can recover some of the missing events without generating new sales.
Therefore, a Data Strength Uplift result cannot automatically be interpreted as an increase in actual revenue or the website's conversion rate.
What Changed in Data Manager?
Google is developing built-in diagnostics for data connections so advertisers can detect incomplete identifiers, transmission errors, and incorrect configurations more quickly. This makes it possible to centrally check the condition of the infrastructure instead of working with several disconnected systems.
October 2026: Expansion to Google Analytics and DV360
On October 13, Google announced the expansion of Data Manager to Google Analytics and Display & Video 360. The company also presented plans for further support of Enhanced Conversions in these products.
For companies that work simultaneously with Google Ads, Analytics, and DV360, this unification may reduce the number of duplicate integrations and simplify data source management.
Some features are still being rolled out, so an official announcement does not mean that all capabilities are already available to every account.
What Results Does Google Report for Data Strength?
In September, Google reported that advertisers using Google Tag Gateway see, on average, 14% more recorded conversions. For Demand Gen, the company reported an uplift of more than 20% among advertisers improving Data Strength with Tag Gateway.
In its October materials, Google also presented a case study of insurance service The Zebra, which reported a 16% increase in the number of conversions and a 19% increase in total conversion value.
These are results from Google's own studies and individual advertising scenarios, not universal benchmarks. An increase in the number of recorded conversions must also be distinguished from an increase in actual sales.
How to Implement Data Strength in Practice
Check Google Tag and Conversions
Core events must be recorded at the correct moment. For example, Purchase should be sent after an actual purchase, not when the checkout page is opened. Currency, value, and transaction ID should be verified. Additional identifiers will not correct incorrect business logic in an event.
Configure Enhanced Conversions
When permitted user data is available, advertisers should evaluate implementing Enhanced Conversions through Google Tag, Google Tag Manager, Data Manager, or a supported API. For B2B, it is important to consider the separate Enhanced Conversions for Leads integration.
Connect Offline Conversions from CRM
For companies with long sales cycles, transmitting Qualified Lead, Sales Qualified Lead, and Closed Won events can be useful. Upload delays and consistent stage definitions must be monitored so that algorithms receive consistent signals.
Check Google Tag Gateway
If a website uses a supported CDN or CMS, implementing Google Tag Gateway may be worth considering. Before implementation, technical compatibility, tag operation, and compliance with privacy requirements should be verified.
Monitor Data Quality
Regularly check Data Manager diagnostics, the number of events, matching accuracy, and the absence of duplicates. If reported CPA decreases after connecting additional data while the CRM records the same number of sales, this may be the effect of improved measurement rather than an actual reduction in acquisition cost.
Why the Update Matters for Advertising Agencies
First-party data quality is becoming a separate subject of Google Ads audits. Two accounts may use similar Smart Bidding strategies but transmit fundamentally different sets of events and identifiers.
An advertiser with a complete CRM integration, Enhanced Conversions, and deduplication controls can provide algorithms with a more complete understanding of the commercial value of leads.
However, agencies must separately report the technical increase in recorded conversions, changes in actual sales, and trends in advertising spending. Recovered attribution must not be presented as additional revenue.
Limitations and Market Reaction
As of October 2026, Data Strength Uplift is still being rolled out. Google has not yet provided a complete public list of supported countries and accounts or a universal calculation methodology.
The main implementation risks are related to transmission errors, duplicate events, inconsistent CRM statuses, and incorrect interpretation of reported metrics. If the same order is sent through the browser and server without proper deduplication, statistics may be distorted.
Industry publications view the development of Data Manager and diagnostics as a step toward greater transparency in data infrastructure. However, an increase in the number of matched conversions does not yet prove the effectiveness of advertising exposure.
