Performance Marketing Audit for Jewelry E-commerce: Complete Checklist

Jewelry e-commerce requires a different performance marketing audit from everyday retail. Buyers may research engagement rings for weeks, compare gemstones across devices and return repeatedly before purchasing. Average order value can range from inexpensive silver jewelry to five-figure custom pieces.

This 18-part audit framework starts with measurement integrity, continues through product feeds, Shopify and onsite conversion, and only then evaluates paid-media bidding, creative, retention and profitability. Every recommendation should be supported by an actual data check, not dashboard ROAS alone.

Audit area 01 / 18

Tracking Architecture: GTM, Server-Side Tagging, and GA4

Before reviewing any campaign, verify that purchases, revenue, product identifiers, and customer journeys are being measured reliably. Jewelry businesses often have long consideration cycles, custom-order requests, and substantial differences between product variants.

  • Audit Google Tag Manager containers and Shopify Customer Events for duplicate or conflicting tags.
  • Verify a complete GA4 ecommerce funnel: view_item_list, select_item, view_item, add_to_wishlist, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, add_shipping_info, add_payment_info, purchase, refund.
  • Validate item_id, item_variant, price, quantity, value, currency and transaction_id against Shopify orders.
  • Review server-side GTM, Meta Conversions API and other server event pipelines. Deduplicate browser/server events using supported identifiers.
  • Check Consent Mode, CMP state transitions, cross-domain measurement, payment redirects and session identifiers.
  • Reconcile completed orders, gross revenue, refunds and cancellations with GA4 and the advertising platforms.
  • Test real purchase flows on mobile and desktop, including guest checkout, Shop Pay and different currencies.
Use Shopify or the order-management system as the financial source of truth. Advertising dashboards may legitimately differ because of attribution windows, reporting dates and consent restrictions. Two purchase events from browser and server must still describe one order.
Audit area 02 / 18

Traffic Attribution: Unassigned, (not set), and Direct / None

Analyze whether GA4 correctly identifies traffic sources before interpreting paid-channel profitability. Long research cycles and repeat visits are common in jewelry, but they do not justify broken attribution.

  • Measure Unassigned channel share and (not set) separately; they refer to different GA4 reporting issues.
  • Investigate unexplained increases after GTM, CMP, server-side or checkout changes.
  • Review UTM consistency across Meta, Pinterest, TikTok, email and influencer links.
  • Validate Google Ads auto-tagging and the preservation of gclid, gbraid and wbraid where relevant.
  • Review unwanted referrals, cross-domain transitions and checkout-as-landing-page anomalies.
  • Compare new versus returning users, mobile versus desktop and purchase-path time lag.
  • Check attribution differences by market, browser and landing page.
Affect diagnostic thresholds: approximately 1% or less unattributed or unclassified traffic is an internal quality target, not an official GA4 benchmark. A 35–55% Direct / None share can be a review range for established jewelry brands, not a guaranteed industry norm. High Direct can also result from missing referral or campaign information.
Audit area 03 / 18

Build the entire jewelry purchase journey in Google Ads, but distinguish observation events from actions that should drive automated bidding. A product view is not commercially equivalent to a completed purchase.

  • Verify View Item, Add to Wishlist, Add to Cart, Begin Checkout, Purchase, Contact and Qualified Lead where relevant.
  • Review conversion source, status, primary/secondary setting, counting method and attribution model.
  • Use Purchase as the default primary ecommerce goal; keep engagement actions secondary unless a controlled experiment requires otherwise.
  • Verify Every counting for separate purchases and One for lead submissions where appropriate.
  • Check Enhanced Conversions and CRM-imported qualified leads for high-ticket consultation funnels.
  • Set purchase windows based on measured time-to-purchase and source-specific platform limits, not an arbitrary maximum.
  • Ensure revenue, taxes, shipping and refunds are handled consistently with the business reporting methodology.

Recommended configuration ranges below are starting hypotheses rather than mandatory Google Ads settings. Data-driven attribution should be used where available and appropriate.
Audit area 04 / 18

Meta Pixel, Conversions API, and Standard Events

Meta needs a consistent signal hierarchy and accurate product identifiers. For jewelry, Wishlist and Contact interactions can meaningfully indicate purchase intent without replacing Purchase as the ultimate sales outcome.

  • Check PageView, ViewContent, Search, AddToWishlist, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, AddPaymentInfo and Purchase.
  • Track Contact and Lead after successful form submission, not on form open; avoid counting a single inquiry twice.
  • Compare content_ids and content_type with actual Meta catalog item or variant IDs.
  • Verify value and currency on ViewContent, AddToCart and Purchase where appropriate.
  • Check Conversions API event_id deduplication, Event Match Quality, timeliness and consent.
  • Pass product, collection, consultation intent and CRM lead IDs through approved parameters and internal integrations.
  • Confirm purchase is not triggered on failed payments, cancellation pages or repeated thank-you visits.
Consultation requests for custom rings and diamond sourcing can be high-value leads. Track them separately from newsletter signups or casual interactions.
Audit area 05 / 18

Google Merchant Center: Jewelry Feed and International Markets

The Merchant Center feed must describe each jewelry item accurately enough for Shopping campaigns and for buyers evaluating metal, gemstone, style and price.

  • Audit id, title, description, link, image_link, availability, price, brand and condition.
  • Validate GTIN/MPN where relevant; do not fabricate identifiers for custom-made pieces.
  • Check item_group_id and variants by ring size, metal, stone and configuration.
  • Include meaningful material, color, product_type and product_detail attributes.
  • Clearly distinguish natural versus lab-grown diamonds and solid gold versus plating.
  • Check product approval, price/availability mismatches, landing-page consistency and image policy issues.
  • Audit target countries, language, currency, taxes, duties, shipping estimates, manufacturing lead times and returns per market.
  • Use supplemental data sources and custom labels for margin tiers, price ranges, collections, stock and bestsellers.
Data dimensionJewelry-specific example
Metal / fineness14K yellow gold; platinum 950
Stone originNatural diamond vs. lab-grown diamond
Gemstone specsCarat weight; cut; clarity; color; grading where applicable
VariantsRing size; metal; gemstone selection
Business labelsMargin tier; collection; ready-to-ship; made-to-order
Offer currency, checkout currency and Purchase event currency must agree with the actual transaction. Separate market feeds or eligible multi-country configurations may be required. A price shown as CAD 1,200 must not be transmitted as USD 1,200.
Audit area 06 / 18

Meta Commerce Manager: Catalog Health and Event Matching

Catalog integrity is critical to dynamic jewelry ads. A correctly delivered ViewContent event is not useful for product retargeting if Meta cannot match it to a catalog item.

  • Review catalog ownership, Shopify integration and update cadence.
  • Identify rejected items, duplicate IDs, missing prices, unavailable products and broken landing-page URLs.
  • Check supplemental data sources merge into the intended item IDs rather than creating duplicates.
  • Compare ViewContent, AddToCart and Purchase content_ids with catalog item/variant IDs.
  • Inspect product sets for engagement rings, wedding bands, earrings, necklaces, high-margin products and new arrivals.
  • Verify regional price, currency and availability alignment.
  • Test event-to-catalog matching for a sample of high-ticket variants across metals, sizes and gemstones.
For example, an event containing a Shopify variant ID will not necessarily match a catalog built around parent product IDs. Resolve this explicitly rather than assuming Meta will infer the relationship.
Audit area 07 / 18

Pinterest Catalogs: The Checks That Matter Most

Pinterest users often discover engagement rings, wedding looks and gift ideas early in the decision process. Feed accuracy and visual quality must be assessed together.

  • Review feed ingestion status, scheduling, errors and the share of approved products.
  • Validate id, title, description, link, image_link, price, availability and variant grouping.
  • Check country/region, language, default currency and landing-page localization.
  • Use strong product photography plus lifestyle assets where appropriate; show rings on hands, earrings on ears and necklaces at realistic scale.
  • Audit Pinterest Tag and Conversions API event match, value, currency and deduplication.
  • Verify product IDs align between catalog and events.
  • Review product groups by collection, occasion, price and availability.
  • Separate click-through from view-through attribution when assessing performance.
Pinterest catalog and Creative Center insights should not be used as proof of incremental sales without a suitable measurement framework.
Audit area 08 / 18

Jewelry Product Pages and Conversion Experience

A jewelry product detail page must resolve visual, practical and trust-related uncertainty before a buyer commits to a high-value purchase.

  • Show studio photographs, on-model scale, macro details, side views, consistent renders and relevant complementary jewelry.
  • Provide videos or 360-degree views where they genuinely help assess stone brilliance and design.
  • Explain metal purity, gemstone origin, carat weight, cut, size, grading, certifications and production time accurately.
  • Display real stock or made-to-order status, delivery estimates, returns, resizing and warranties.
  • Add Email This Item, Share This Item and Add to Wishlist for collaborative decisions.
  • Offer Get Help Choosing, Ask About This Ring, Book a Consultation and Request Customization for high-intent visitors.
  • Attach product IDs, variants, customer questions and source details to lead submissions.
  • Test mobile galleries, zoom, size selectors, financing disclosures and checkout transition.
The same product should look credible in the Shopping ad, product detail page and cart. Avoid listing a $750 configuration that opens a $2,400 default variant without a clear explanation.
Audit area 09 / 18

Exit-Intent, Behavioral Popups, and Lead Automation

Not every jewelry visitor is ready to buy during the first session. Triggered assistance should capture qualified intent without obstructing browsing or checkout.

  • Test assistance prompts for two or more meaningful page views, with frequency caps and exclusions.
  • Evaluate exit-intent offers on desktop and behavior-based alternatives on mobile.
  • Offer ring sizing assistance, diamond consultation, saved-product reminders, insured delivery or custom design help.
  • Track which product or collection motivated the form and whether a valid marketing consent was given.
  • Connect submissions to Klaviyo, CRM or another direct-marketing platform.
  • Verify the correct welcome, browse abandonment, wishlist, consultation and checkout follow-up flows.
  • Exclude buyers from abandoned-cart communications once the purchase is completed.
  • Measure qualified leads, consultation bookings, purchases and complaints rather than pop-up signups alone.

For premium products, a useful consultation often performs a more appropriate role than an indiscriminate discount. Run controlled tests to determine the actual effect.

Shopify: Checkout, Customer Events, Markets, and Automation

Shopify is not just a storefront. Its checkout, data pipelines, product inventory, markets and customer profiles determine how effectively advertising can turn traffic into profitable orders.

  • Test Shop Pay, guest checkout, available payment methods and high-value order limits.
  • Review Customer Events, custom/app pixels and duplicate GTM or partner integrations.
  • Validate mobile checkout, taxes, insurance, delivery, discount codes and payment errors.
  • Audit Shopify Markets: country-specific pricing, currencies, domains, language, duties and return terms.
  • Check variant inventory, made-to-order availability, lead times and catalog syncing.
  • Review discount stacking, exclusions and margin erosion.
  • Audit first-time versus repeat buyers, VIP segments, consultation leads and consent statuses.
  • Inspect Shopify Flow and Klaviyo automations for real execution, conflicting triggers and handoff gaps.
  • Reconcile refunds, returns, cancellations and financial reporting with advertising conversion value.
Important: Shopify Customer Events and checkout extensions have their own rules and permissions. A pixel installation that works on product pages may still fail to capture the correct checkout state.
Audit area 11 / 18

Only evaluate campaign optimization after validating measurement and product data. For jewelry, differences in ticket size and margin can make account-level CPA misleading.

  • Review internal signal-volume targets: approximately 50 primary biddable conversions monthly in the relevant account/campaign group, and 30 for a major standalone campaign. These are Affect review thresholds, not Google technical minimums.
  • Confirm the bidding objective reflects purchase value or contribution margin where feasible; avoid optimizing ecommerce sales campaigns toward page views or cart events.
  • Separate branded and nonbranded search when volume and strategy justify it.
  • Analyze search terms, negative keywords, search partners, geo, device, auction insights and landing pages.
  • Segment Shopping by relevant categories, collections, price ranges or margin when volume supports it.
  • Check daily budget utilization and distinguish actual budget caps from restrictive tCPA/tROAS targets or insufficient demand.
  • Evaluate PMax overlap and incremental role versus Search/Shopping; review Channel Performance, product reporting and search terms.
  • Audit PMax assets, product listing groups, URL expansion, brand exclusions, audience signals and search themes.
  • Verify any audience signals (custom segments, in-market, affinity and first-party lists) are relevant; they are signals, not hard targeting restrictions.
  • Assess YouTube/Demand Gen as separate discovery mechanisms rather than assuming PMax provides material non-search reach.
DiagnosticReview question
Conversion volumeAre there enough primary outcomes for stable campaign-level learning?
BiddingIs the optimization target profit-aware and consistent with real transactions?
BudgetsAre campaigns spending the allocated amount? If not, why?
SearchIs brand separated and nonbrand intent structured?
ShoppingAre category/collection economics visible?
PMaxWhich channels and product groups generate measured value?
An underspending campaign is not automatically budget-limited. A high tROAS target may constrain delivery. Likewise, value-based bidding on revenue can favor high-priced items that are not the most profitable.
Audit area 12 / 18

Meta Ads: Advantage+ Sales and Value-Based Optimization

Meta should be assessed as a coordinated acquisition system, not simply by the dashboard ROAS of one Advantage+ Sales campaign.

  • Check Advantage+ Sales structure, market scope, primary Purchase event and reliable value transmission.
  • Review first-time versus returning buyer composition and Customer Lifecycle exclusions.
  • Analyze category mix and high-ticket versus entry-level product sales.
  • Avoid excessive fragmentation across small sales campaigns or tiny audience sets.
  • Review campaign learning, delivery constraints, spend concentration and meaningful creative diversification.
  • Test whether value optimization aligns with margin and whether CRM-based new-customer measurement tells the same story.
  • Audit catalog sales, available product sets and their relationship to broad acquisition.
When repeat customers dominate purchase results, reported ROAS may overstate the effectiveness of new-customer acquisition. Compare to Shopify or CRM-defined new customers.
Audit area 13 / 18

Meta Ads: Remarketing, Creative Fatigue, and SMM Support

For jewelry, retargeting should reflect consideration stage and the exact products being evaluated. Facebook and Instagram profiles also act as trust signals for expensive purchases.

  • Check product-view, wishlist, cart, checkout and consultation audiences; avoid overly narrow standalone ad sets.
  • Verify dynamic ads reference the right product variants and exclude unavailable items.
  • Review frequency, creative fatigue, CTR, CPC, conversion rates and changing auction conditions together.
  • Develop materially distinct concepts: on-model imagery, macro stone shots, UGC, craftsmanship, testimonials, gift ideas and custom-order consultations.
  • Check Instagram feed, Reels, Highlights, comments and message response times.
  • Ensure profile content explains shipping, warranty, returns, gemstone authenticity and consultation options.
  • Review Lead Ads, Instagram Direct, WhatsApp and creator/Partnership Ads where useful.
  • Measure lead quality, booking rate and CRM purchase outcomes, not merely low cost per lead.
Five ads built from the same image with slightly different copy are not necessarily five independent creative concepts. Jewelry creative should show genuine product and messaging variety.
Audit area 14 / 18

Additional Paid Media: Pinterest, Microsoft, TikTok, and Reddit

Channel selection should reflect actual buyer intent, market coverage, creative readiness and measurement quality.

  • Review Pinterest Shopping and inspiration-led traffic, including assisted journeys.
  • Check Microsoft Advertising search terms, Shopping feeds, UET and any imported Google Ads conversion settings.
  • Assess TikTok vertical videos, creators, catalog quality, Pixel and Events API.
  • Evaluate Reddit for diamond education, ring comparisons and niche purchase-intent conversations where applicable.
  • Avoid applying identical ROAS assumptions to discovery and branded-search channels.
  • Review multi-channel frequency, audience overlap and attributable new customers.
Prioritize only channels that can be supported by appropriate creative, catalog data and campaign volume.
Audit area 15 / 18

Direct Marketing: CRM, Customer Segments, and Retention

Jewelry consideration and purchase frequency vary sharply by category. A bridal purchaser is not the same as a frequent fashion-jewelry customer.

  • Audit welcome, browse abandonment, wishlist, cart and checkout abandonment flows.
  • Add ring-size assistance, custom jewelry inquiry follow-ups, appointment reminders and order-care education.
  • Review post-purchase, review request, cross-sell, anniversary, VIP and win-back sequences.
  • Separate first-time, repeat, VIP, bridal, gift and inactive customer segments.
  • Maintain channel-specific email, SMS and WhatsApp permissions and suppression lists.
  • Validate product recommendations and remove sold/unavailable items.
  • Prevent purchased items from remaining in abandonment sequences.
  • Measure deliverability, unsubscribe, qualified leads and downstream customer value.
Use reasonable message frequency and do not equate a collected phone number with permission for marketing messages.
Audit area 16 / 18

Jewelry Unit Economics, Seasonality, and Geographic Profitability

Audit decisions should ultimately be made against contribution margin and customer economics, not a single aggregate ROAS.

  • Compare revenue, COGS, gross and contribution margins, payment fees, shipping insurance, returns and discounts.
  • Measure new customer acquisition cost, first-order profitability and realistic LTV by category.
  • Review engagement rings, wedding bands, gift jewelry and custom items separately.
  • Analyze Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, wedding season, engagement season and the holiday peak.
  • Check production lead times and delivery cutoffs before seasonal promotion.
  • Compare performance by country, region, device and shipping economics.
  • Investigate whether refunds and offline consultations are represented in reporting.
Commercial KPIWhy it matters
Contribution marginMeasures value after variable fulfillment costs
New customer CACDistinguishes acquisition from repeat orders
Refund / return ratePrevents inflated net performance
AOV by categoryHighlights very different purchase economics
Time to purchaseGuides remarketing and conversion windows
A $1,500 order at a 65% gross margin does not have the same acquisition economics as a $1,500 order at a 25% margin. Long-cycle bridal products also require a different retention model from repeat-purchase accessories.
Audit area 17 / 18

Mobile UX, Site Speed, and Conversion Friction

Detailed photography must remain fast and usable on mobile. Many jewelry journeys start on mobile and continue elsewhere.

  • Check mobile image loading, Core Web Vitals, gallery usability and responsive product details.
  • Test zoom, size selectors, financing disclosures and long-form product descriptions.
  • Compare mobile and desktop product views, carts, checkout completion and AOV.
  • Look for payment failures, broken promo fields and slow third-party scripts.
  • Confirm on-model media, videos and 3D embeds do not obscure key purchase actions.
  • Test contact and consultation forms on small screens.
If mobile view-to-cart or cart-to-checkout rates underperform, verify usability before changing advertising bids.
Audit area 18 / 18

Competitor Intelligence and Advertising Communication

A jewelry brand competes on trust, assortment, certification, craftsmanship, financing, shipping and service, not price alone. The audit should examine publicly visible advertising communication in addition to on-site offers.

  • Compare gemstone specifications, metal purity, customization, product photography and certificates.
  • Review competitors’ warranty, return, insurance, resizing and shipping terms.
  • Inspect visible creative angles, promotional claims, seasonal messaging and landing-page destinations.
  • Use Google Ads Transparency Center to review publicly displayed Google ads.
  • Use Meta Ad Library to examine active Facebook and Instagram creative messaging.
  • Use TikTok Commercial Content Library for eligible disclosed ads, and Creative Center Top Ads for curated creative examples.
  • Record creatives, claims, offers and observed landing pages; never infer exact spend, CPA or ROAS from public ad libraries.
Open the official tools: Google Ads Transparency Center, Meta Ad Library, TikTok Commercial Content Library, and TikTok Creative Center Top Ads. Geographic access and coverage differ; Creative Center is curated rather than exhaustive.

Affect thresholds cited here are internal diagnostic guidelines, not official platform requirements or universal jewelry industry benchmarks.
