On-Site Conversion Popup Tools: Exit-Intent Guide for 2026

Behavioral and exit-intent popups help businesses engage website visitors at relevant moments, collect contact information, recover abandoned shopping journeys, and move prospective customers toward a conversion. But selecting a popup builder is not always the first step: many ecommerce, CRM, and direct marketing platforms already include the functionality you need.

This guide explains how exit intent works, which triggers and audience rules matter, and how to create onsite campaigns using Shopify, HubSpot, Salesforce, Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Omnisend, CRO platforms, or dedicated popup tools.

What Are Behavioral Popups, and Why Use Them?

Behavioral popups are forms or messages displayed when a website visitor meets specified conditions. Unlike a generic popup shown immediately after page load, a behavioral message takes into account what the visitor is doing and where they are in the purchase journey.

Businesses use popups to capture leads, offer discounts, remind shoppers about abandoned carts, assist with product selection, invite visitors to consultations, or direct them to useful content.

Trigger
Example message
Visiting a specific page
Offer a consultation related to the service being viewed
Viewing several products
Help the visitor choose the right product
Scrolling through 60–70% of an article
Offer a report or checklist download
Spending 30 seconds on a page
Invite the visitor to a product demo
Adding an item to the cart
Remind the shopper about free shipping
Remaining inactive
Offer assistance
Returning to the website
Display a personalized offer
Attempting to leave a page
Offer a discount, consultation, or saved cart

Triggers and targeting are different settings. A trigger determines when a form appears, while targeting determines who is eligible to see it. For example, an exit-intent popup can be limited to new visitors who added a product to their cart but have not completed a purchase.

What Is Exit Intent?

Exit intent is a technique for detecting signals that a visitor may be about to leave a website. On desktop devices, a common method tracks cursor movement toward the browser's address bar, tabs, or upper window boundary. When that movement is detected, the website displays a prepared message.

For example, a visitor may compare several airport parking options without making a reservation. As they move to leave, the site could offer to save their options or remind them about free cancellation terms.

Mobile devices have no mouse cursor. Some platforms therefore use alternative signals such as rapid upward scrolling, Back-button behavior, or returning to a page after minimizing the browser.

Important: Exit intent is not a perfect prediction of intent. A visitor may trigger the event without actually planning to leave. Mobile support also varies by vendor and browser.

Common Exit-Intent Campaigns

For ecommerce, common applications include capturing an email address before departure, offering product-selection assistance, and addressing an unfinished cart. For B2B websites, exit intent can present a consultation, free audit, or industry report. Publishers and blogs can offer subscriptions or related content.

A discount is not always necessary. Guidance, additional information, or help with a purchase decision may be more valuable to the visitor.

Four Ways to Set Up Behavioral and Exit-Intent Popups

A separate tool is not always required. Many ecommerce, CRM, and marketing automation platforms already support onsite forms and display rules. Specialized products become more useful when those built-in capabilities are insufficient.

Shopify FormsSee details

Official website: shopify.com

Shopify provides its own Shopify Forms app for creating popup and embedded forms that collect email addresses, SMS subscriptions, and additional customer information.

  • Target specific page types, such as product or collection pages.
  • Display forms on the first, second, or third page view.
  • Set a display delay and separate device-specific behavior.
  • Use desktop exit intent.
  • Customize imagery, text, fields, and appearance.

To create a form, open Shopify Forms, add a popup, customize its design, and configure the Behavior section. The desktop exit-intent option is labeled Show form when visitors attempt to leave page. Forms can also be used with Shopify Flow for downstream automation.

Limitations: Shopify Forms does not offer full multistep journeys or conditional logic. Complex quizzes, experiments, and advanced personalization may require another app.

HubSpotSee details

Official website: hubspot.com

HubSpot creates onsite popups through Calls-to-Action (CTAs), including popup boxes, sticky banners, and slide-ins. Activation triggers include clicks, percentage scrolled, exit intent, time on page, and inactivity.

Teams can define targeting by page, visitor characteristics, frequency, and repeat-display rules. To configure a popup, create a CTA and choose the relevant Activation Triggers under Targeting.

HubSpot supports desktop exit intent and separate mobile exit-detection mechanisms. Its main advantage is direct integration with the CRM: captured contacts can feed workflows, contact-property updates, tasks, and email automation on eligible plans.

Limitations: Advanced features vary by subscription. The older HubSpot Pop-up Forms tool has been retired; new campaigns should use CTAs.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud PersonalizationSee details

Official website: salesforce.com

Salesforce's behavioral onsite messaging is primarily associated with Marketing Cloud Personalization, formerly Interaction Studio. Rather than being a simple form builder, it personalizes customer experiences using behavioral and customer data.

  • Popup messages and onsite banners
  • Exit-intent and behavioral conditions
  • Recommendations informed by browsing history
  • Different messages for customer segments
  • Experiments and personalized campaigns

Teams can use web campaign templates to capture leads, address abandoned purchases, recommend alternatives, or communicate with existing customers. Some implementations require custom templates or additional data integrations.

Limitations: Marketing Cloud Personalization is a separate enterprise product. A standard Salesforce Sales Cloud license does not automatically include it.

Use Your Existing Direct Marketing PlatformExplore tools

For brands already running email or SMS programs, an integrated signup form is often the most practical option. Contacts enter the same system that will handle subsequent communications, reducing the need to connect multiple tools.

KlaviyoSee details

Official website: klaviyo.com

Klaviyo offers a flexible Signup Forms builder. Forms can be triggered by time, scrolling, multiple page views, or exit intent. Targeting can incorporate URL and UTM parameters, device, geography, list or segment membership, cart contents, browsing behavior, and repeat-display frequency.

A visitor arriving from a paid campaign can see a different offer than an existing subscriber. Klaviyo also supports multistep forms, A/B tests, and subsequent email or SMS automation.

For exit intent, navigate to Signup Forms → Targeting & behavior → Display → Timing and choose When visitor is exiting the page.

Key differentiator: Close integration between onsite behavior, customer segments, purchase data, and lifecycle communications.

MailchimpSee details

Official website: mailchimp.com

Mailchimp's Popup Form Builder helps capture email and SMS contacts. It supports page, geography, traffic source, visitor, and device targeting, along with triggers such as time on page, inactivity, rapid scrolling, and exit intent.

Mailchimp also supports popup A/B testing and frequency settings. In Forms → Popup forms, choose a template and configure Who should see your form and When should it show.

Key differentiator: Signup forms connected to email and SMS campaigns, audience segmentation, and follow-up communications.

OmnisendSee details

Official website: omnisend.com

Omnisend is an ecommerce email and SMS marketing platform that provides popup forms, embedded forms, and interactive signup mechanisms. Brands can collect contact details, present welcome discounts, and create subscriber segments.

Once visitors subscribe, automated welcome sequences and other communications can begin. Available triggers and targeting rules should be reviewed for the specific form type and subscription tier.

Key differentiator: Subscriber acquisition as part of an integrated ecommerce email and SMS automation system.

Use a CRO or Onsite Personalization PlatformExplore tools

Some conversion rate optimization platforms have broader onsite messaging capabilities. Here, a popup is one component of a program designed to personalize and improve the overall visitor experience.

OptiMonkSee details

Official website: optimonk.com

OptiMonk combines behavioral popups with onsite personalization and conversion optimization. Available triggers include exit intent, delay, scroll depth, clicks, inactivity, and custom JavaScript events.

These can be combined with audience rules, such as showing a message only to new visitors interested in a product category or visitors from a specific advertising campaign. OptiMonk also supports message testing and personalization of website elements.

Key differentiator: Popup campaigns can expand into a wider onsite CRO program.

WisepopsSee details

Official website: wisepops.com

Wisepops manages onsite communications across popups, sticky bars, embedded messages, notification feeds, and other formats.

  • Desktop and mobile exit-intent mechanisms
  • Time- and scroll-based triggers
  • Source and UTM targeting
  • Visited-page conditions
  • Frequency caps
  • Campaign priorities and sequences
  • A/B testing

On mobile, exit-intent mechanisms can use upward scrolling and certain Back-button behaviors, subject to browser capabilities.

Key differentiator: Coordinating several onsite communication formats rather than managing standalone popups.

ConvertFlowSee details

Official website: convertflow.com

ConvertFlow is a conversion funnel builder combining forms, quizzes, surveys, product recommendations, landing pages, and multistep journeys. Popups can use exit intent, scroll triggers, delayed display, clicks, and cart-related behavior.

For example, a popup may ask two questions about a visitor's needs, deliver a personalized recommendation, and then request contact information. Answers can guide the next step and be sent to a CRM.

Key differentiator: Combining a behavioral popup with a multistep conversion funnel.

Which Popup Setup Should You Choose?

The most useful selection criterion is not the number of available popup templates. It is whether your existing tools can implement the visitor experience you need.

Specialized popup builders

For basic exit intent offering a subscription, discount, or consultation, your existing marketing platform is often sufficient. Consider a specialized service when you need sophisticated journeys, more behavioral data, interactive elements, or independently managed onsite campaigns.

How to Measure Popup Performance

Do not assess a campaign only by counting submitted forms. Important metrics include:

  • Popup impression rate: The share of eligible visitors who actually saw the message.
  • Popup conversion rate: The share of popup impressions that produced the intended action.
  • Lead quality: How many captured contacts became qualified prospects.
  • Purchase conversion rate: Whether purchase likelihood changed.
  • Revenue per visitor: The impact on revenue across website traffic.
  • Unsubscribe rate: Whether the approach increases subsequent opt-outs.

Where possible, run an A/B test with a holdout group that does not see the popup. A high form conversion rate does not necessarily represent incremental sales. Some of those visitors may have subscribed or purchased without the popup.

Also limit display frequency, exclude existing subscribers, and thoroughly test the mobile experience.

Final Takeaway

Behavioral and exit-intent popups do not necessarily require a specialized platform. Start with the capabilities of the ecommerce, CRM, or direct marketing tools you already use. Add a dedicated builder when those tools cannot support your specific targeting, personalization, or conversion requirements.

The goal is not to interrupt as many visitors as possible. It is to show the right message to an eligible visitor at the right moment and measure whether that interaction produces additional qualified leads, purchases, and customer value.
